Suicide Squad Got an Academy Award Nomination and It Should Win

We can’t believe we’re writing this- Suicide Squad will win an Academy Award. David Ayer did terribly in structuring the movie (he admitted it on Facebook) but he designed an aesthetic like we’ve never seen before. Neon green strobe lights, blue spray-paint, and 80s metal. Margot Robbie became iconic. It nailed the makeup and design and deserves an Academy Award for it.

Natalie Portman Just Became 2017 Best Actress Front-Runner!

Natalie Portman abruptly became the front-runner for Best Actress after a screening of her Jacqueline Kennedy biopic got a standing ovation and rave reviews. Amy Adams may be a contender with two movies but we think Natalie Portman will walk out of the Kodak Theater with her second Academy Award come February. People are saying her performance as the First Lady is better than her in Black Swan.

What’s Next For JENNIFER LAWRENCE

Jennifer Lawrence is arguably the most famous actress of the decade. She’s been in twenty-two movies- making over two billion dollars at the box office. She’s got four Academy Award nominations (one win), two Golden Globes, two SAG’s, and four CCA’s. She’s been on the cover of every major magazine in print. And she’s only 25. But while it’s easy to say she’s the new Julia Roberts, will her fandom die down in the next year or two?

It seems her likability is waning.Fans became annoyed when the actress refused to wear blue body paint for her role in X-Men as Mystique (she is adamant that she won’t return for the next movie if she isn’t paid more). Her open letter for equal pay was important but her demand of $20 million a movie now seems undeserved.

Her demand will be put to the test this December with Passengers- a sci-fi romance co-starring Chris Pratt. If it is a spectacular failure she’s still got two prestige films next year to back her up. One is an untitled Darren Aronofsky film with Domhnall Gleeson. The second, more promising award bait, is Steven Spielberg’s It’s What I Do- telling the real life story of a wartime photographer held captive by the Libyan Army in 2011.

Ideally, Lawrence will get a blockbuster out of Passengers and an Academy Award out of It’s What I Do. If she can pull it 0ff, her career will be stronger than ever. Even if she only gets one of them, the next few years will be set for her. If not, Lawrence will have a lot of explaining to do. She is arguably the most famous actress today, but she’ll need to work a little bit harder if she wants to keep that title tomorrow.

Eddie Redmayne LOSES OSCAR Because of “Jupiter Ascending”

download

Eddie Redmayne needs to work in overdrive if he wants that Oscar. The young talent is so close, winning the Golden Globe and SAG Award for his breathtaking performance as Steven Hawking. His only competition is Michael Keaton, who transformed his career with Birdman.

Redmayne was predicted to take the win but his disastrous attachment to Jupiter Ascending could stop him. What’s so frustrating about this entire situation is the timing. Redmayne played the absurd villain in the space flick years ago. But after countless delays, the movie didn’t come out until this month (inconveniently close to the Academy Awards).

Julianne Moore is in somewhat of the same boat. While she’s almost guaranteed to win for her profound performance in Still Alice, her attachment to Seventh Son could take away her trophy. Moore filmed the movie years ago but, like Redmayne, the movie didn’t get a premiere until now.

Some say that these movies won’t hinder their chances but these people said the same thing about Norbit. Infamously, Eddie Murphy lost his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (for Dreamgirls) after the premiere of the disastrously terrible comedy (it was a failed attempt at duplicating Tyler Perry’s Madea).

Will Redmayne fall under the same fate? If he does lose come Sunday, we can’t put the fault completely on Jupiter Ascending. Michael Keaton’s performance is worthy of the award. The question is whether the Academy will vote for someone’s singular achievement (Redmayne) or their entire body of work (Keaton). The answer, we’re afraid, is likely the latter.

WHAT? Jared Leto as The Joker!!!

images (5)

If anyone could reprise a role already defined, it’s Jared Leto. After critics and audiences were in awe of Heath Ledger’s truly incredible performance, it was difficult to picture another Joker. The character is too iconic to lose in the past, so DC somehow has to make a controversial move to bring back the famous villain. With news of a Suicide Squad movie, all eyes are on who could play the famous roles that go beyond the pages of comics and the screens of movies. There were whispers that Jared Leto would take on the Joker and that whisper has evolved into a deafening roar. The Academy Award winning actor could play the character with a sickening cracked smile. Instead of imitating Ledger’s performance (which can’t be imitated), Leto could bring back the character to how he was originally envisioned in the comics. A more traditional Joker (with green hair and purple suit) could bring back the famous character without stepping on Ledger’s brilliant reimagining of the villain. It’ll be interesting to see how DC moves forward with the character. If Jared Leto is involved it could work out beautifully.

INTERSTELLAR Movie Review!!!

Despite confused reviews from the biggest voices, Interstellar is genius. Christopher Nolan’s love letter to the universe is a stunning spectacle with a beautiful heart. It’s intimacy on a grand scale. The vast exploration through space and time is grounded through one girl (the center of the universe and heart of the story). It’s a mesh between the unknown and the closely familiar as the film tugs at your heart and demands you to think. Matthew McConaughey is profoundly honest while Anne Hathaway goes surprisingly unnoticed. The first 2/3 of the film cannot be argued but the last forty-five minutes are what makes the movie brilliant. Through the entire film you are lost in the wonder of beyond until Nolan ambitiously ventures into the black hole. SPOILER. It’s in this nothingness and enlightenment, where the majority audiences doubt what’s going on because they don’t try and understand. Nolan connects emotion with gravity to transcend space and time. Trapped by the little knowledge of Earth (Murphy’s bookshelf) he needs to inform the planet. He does this through gravity (through love). SPOILER OVER. It’s this incredible realization that makes Interstellar a sophisticated masterpiece of constellations. It was so refreshingly unpredictable with twists that kept you immersed in the grand story. Because such little was known about the movie, you were able to discover the awe of what was unfolding as the charters discovered the wonder in creation. The three hour movie was without turbulence- it was three acts seamlessly woven together. Were there questions left unanswered? Yes. But it didn’t matter. The point of this movie didn’t have to do with science it had to do with emotion. As Anne Hathaway gently whispers in the movie emotions don’t connect with science but go beyond science. This great metaphor is what it really is about. Interstellar transcends because the passion within it is limitless.
