Every studio exec will be sweating this summer. Despite a triumphant spring with surprise hits like Deadpool and Zootopia, it seems studios will struggle through the rest of 2016. This Memorial Day was a disastrous way to kick off the season. X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice: Through the Looking Glass both underperformed by tens of millions of dollars. We expect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Warcraft, BFG and Tarzan will be massive disappointments. Independence Day: Resurgence, Jason Bourne, and Star Trek: Beyond might do well but Ghostbusters is an unsafe bet. Suicide Squad will have a volatile premiere after Batman V Superman destroyed the infrastructure of the DCU. Marvel shouldn’t smirk- Doctor Strange won’t bring up their numbers in the fall. The only movie that will do tremendously well is Finding Dory from Pixar. Besides that safe bet, every studio needs to be nervous. Their PR departments need to go above and beyond to make sure their movies are competitive in the summer. At this point, nothing is guaranteed.
