While I don’t love the latest remake of The Jungle Book, I can appreciate it. It’s a great reboot compared to other live-action fairy tales attempted by Disney over the last few years. Obviously the visuals are amazing. Jon Favreau has added a complexity to the dimensional animated classic. I just never loved the story of The Jungle Book to begin with. Neel Sethi is good. Idris Elba is menacing. Bill Murray and Christopher Walken made admirable attempts to escape the legacies of Phil Harris and Louis Prima. It’s still a good movie- it’s just not one that I walked away from in awe. It’s gotten universal praise and is probably going to get every Academy Award for technical effects, so see it, but it isn’t a revolutionary movie. It’s an impressive movie- but not one of the best.
