Ellen Degeneres played it safe in 2014 (and it worked) but now Chris Rock is going to come in and add edge to the all too predictable award show. When he hosted in 2005, he kind of pulled a Ricky Gervais. We don’t want him to be mean, but we don’t want him to play it safe either. Throw in a Bill Cosby joke in the opening monologue. Make it controversial. Make it Tweetable. You can’t make us care about who wins Best Sound Design, but you can make us pay attention. The Oscars will always be IMPORTANT but will it stay RELEVANT? Chris Rock on the stage might be able to pull that off. He’s funny but what’s more important is that he’s brilliant. His jokes are sharp. He can bring in an audience for the Oscars but can also bring an edge. We’re looking forward to it.
