Acril Lavigne and Ashely Tisdale are set to play Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in the fairy-tale animated musical comedy Charmed. They’ll be joining Demi Lovato, who’s going to play the lead (an unknown character named Lenore).
The movies not being made by a major studio like Disney, Dreamwork, Illumination, or Blue Sky but they’ve got an impressive cast and an impressive creative team. It’s being directed by Ross Venokur and written by John H. Williams, who won an Oscar for working on Shrek (which was another fairy-tale animated comedy).
In the past couple of years we’ve been seeing a major theme of bringing back Disney’s famous princesses. We’ve got a long line of live action movies in development after Cinderella smashed box office expectations. Disney’s latest TV movie musical, The Descendants, focused on the kids of our favorite Disney villains and became a massive success. The premiere had a bigger audience than the first High School Musical which means it’ll be playing on repeat on the Disney Channel for the next four months.
Charmed is going to try to get in their movie before Disney over-saturates the market. While the voice cast are big enough names, I think that they are geared to a specific demographic. Shrek was going to be taken seriously by the industry because they cast legitimate actors/comedians (Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy). In this, they cast trashy pop singers listened to only by tweens. So I’m going to guess this is going to be a trashy movie watched only by tweens. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Charmed could make a lot of money, which is what it probably set out to do.
So parents, get ready to buy this DVD off of some Target rack and be ready to watch it again, and again, and again.
