It’s been quite the year for Misty Copeland, who was just became the first African American to be named principal at American Ballet Theater. She danced some of the most iconic roles in the ballet world and got on the cover of Time earlier this year. Today, she announced she’ll be coming to Broadway! For two weeks only, you can catch Copeland in On the Town. She’ll take over for New York City Ballet principal dancer Megan Fairchild as Ivy Smith. On August 25th, she’ll walk a couple blocks from Lincoln Center to Broadway. While we would’ve liked to see her in An American In Paris (the OTHER ballet/musical of the season), we’re glad she’s going to at least be on the Great White Way. She’s become a celebrity in the dance world, and her name on billboards will help On the Town‘s ticket sales (the musical’s been struggling without a Tony win). We think this is a great way for Copeland to maintain her momentum (2015 has been a great year for her). We love this merge of two worlds and are excited to see Misty Copeland shift from ballet to Broadway.
