Despite so much promise, Avengers: Age of Ultron ultimately failed to take the biggest opening weekend prize. 2012’s Avengers will keep the title for now, but just wait until Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out. Despite an incredible opening day in the U.S. ($84 million), Saturday didn’t pull in enough money for them to beat out the original. Some say that it was because of the massive fight between Mayweather-Pacquiao (which consumed discussions for weeks). Whatever the reason, it’s too bad the movie couldn’t pull through and take the top spot. While it isn’t great news, the sequel is making up for this weekend with massive grossing overseas. Its made $627 million in just 12 days, already making more money than every movie in Phase 1 in just two weeks. That’s impressive. It will quickly take over as this year’s biggest blockbuster (from Fast and Furious 7) and might even be strong enough to keep the title from Star Wars (but that’s still up for debate). Marvel is still making a ridiculous amounts of money so we shouldn’t feel bad for them, but I think they were secretly hoping they’d beat their record.
