SpongeBob SquarePants Coming to Broadway!!!

Oh God! I honestly thought this was a joke, but it’s really happening. Nickelodeon’s absurdly successful cartoon is coming to Broadway, according to Entertainment Weekly. What’s even more insane about that statement is that John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Aerosmith, and Sara Bareilles are writing the songs. The opening number is literally called “Bikini Bottom Day.” What is going on!? I mean, I will admit that SpongeBob is one of the better kid’s cartoons. Even adults can laugh out loud at it’s surprising wit. But how (and why) would it come to Broadway!? I could see it as a kid’s show like the Bernstein Bears off-Broadway but could Nickelodeon really make this the next Shrek!? A full blown legitimate Broadway musical about a yellow sponge living in a pineapple under the sea will get laughed off the stage. I mean, how could they do it with out looking like a Disney theme park show? I’d assume the iconic voices behind the characters couldn’t play their parts on stage so would it just be actors stuffed in Halloween costumes? Tina Landau is said to direct, which makes us think their going to try and make this as a real, true Broadway show. And, I mean, as absurd as it might be to say this- the production could be the next Peter and the Starcatchers. I mean they have some of the best songwriters working on the project, so is it too unrealistic to say this could be good? If done right, I think they could pull it off. I say go as far as you can with it. If their going to do a SpongeBob musical make it absolutely spectacular or a horrifying disaster. Either way, we’re going to be entertained.
