It’s official: we’re excited for Star Wars Episode VII. If we weren’t before, JJ Abrams has forced us too.
While we loved the cast list he put out for us last month, this news is even better. After complaints about a lack of female cast members JJ Abrams has exceeded all expectations by grabbing arguably the two most talented women in hollywood.
12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie have just joined the Star Wars universe!!!
Nyong’o, fresh out of the Yale School of Drama, has already become Hollywood’s darling this year after receiving an Oscar for her incredible performance in 12 Years a Slave. We were first worried that because of the color of her skin, unfairly, there would be a lack of opportunities for her going forward. But this new casting choice puts the rumors to rest.
Gwendoline Christie was also tapped on the shoulder. The 6 foot Bristish actress was propelled into stardom for playing Brienne of Tarth, a TRUE female heroine, on Game of Thrones. Because of the surprising (but deserved) popularity Christie received, she has Hollywood knocking on her door. Just recently she was asked to take over the role of Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part Two.
This casting announcement is not only incredible for these talented women, it implies that perhaps there has been a shift in Hollywood. Women seem to finally be getting what they deserve: roles not dictated by the superficial. Niang’o and Christie prove that your more than the color of your skin or the size of your shoulders.
We’re ecstatic for this spectacular news coming from the Star Wars camp. We dare anyone to try and say the opposite. It seems everyone loves this casting and we can’t see a reason not too. Star Wars Episode VII could be a revolutionary spectacular experience. And if it is, we have these two women to thank.
